KITCHENER – Eight convenient leaf drop-off sites for the city’s 2020 leaf collection program are opening to the public Oct. 16. Drop-off sites, located in neighbourhoods across the city, will be open seven days a week during daylight hours from Friday, Oct. 16 to Friday, Dec. 11:
- Schaefer Park - Bloomingdale Road
- Breithaupt Park - Kinsman Park, off Union Street
- Kitchener Auditorium - Ottawa Street North entrance
- Meinzinger Park Soccer Fields - Homer Watson Boulevard
- Lions Arena - Rittenhouse Road
- Upper Canada Park - Pioneer Drive
- Cherry Park - Strange Street and Waverly Road
- Hofstetter Park - 40 Hofstetter Ave.
No bags, including no paper yard waste bags, will be accepted at the drop-off sites. Residents are asked to pile their leaves loose and de-bag at the site. Drop-off locations are for leaves only, not household waste. Any other materials if left at drop-off locations are considered illegal dumping and will be subject to a fine. Commercial haulers are not permitted on the leaf drop-off sites. City staff will monitor the drop-off sites and take a zero-tolerance approach with offenders.
Residents are also encouraged to re-use leaves as they still have lots to offer the environment when they fall! Dry leaves are a great carbon-rich ingredient for your compost pile that can enrich your garden, improve the soil around your trees and shrubs, and helps make your plants healthier.
The City of Kitchener provides a loose-leaf collection service for select areas with heavy tree cover from Nov. 9 to Nov. 27. Staff will pick up leaves raked to your curb during a single pickup. Residents are asked to rake their leaves to the curb the weekend before their scheduled pickup. To learn if your address will receive loose leaf collection or what leaf collection options are available to you, use the online tool or call 519-741-2345.
Leaf accumulation hot spot areas are continuously monitored by staff. Residents living in an area identified as a hot spot on the leaf collection map will receive leaf collection as required. Leaves in these zones must be raked out no earlier than Oct. 26 and no later than Nov. 30.
Residents who live outside of the more heavily forested areas who are not able to mulch or compost their leaves on their own property can also use the Region of Waterloo bagged yard waste program.
