In a significant step toward addressing the growing need for affordable housing, the City of Kitchener is unlocking city-owned land to build not-for-profit housing. This initiative, aimed at creating long-term solutions to the housing crisis, will be carried out through a Request for Proposals (RFP) process, inviting qualified organizations to submit plans for development.

The RFP process is part of the City’s broader strategy to increase the supply of affordable and supportive housing for residents. Proposals that can address critical housing needs are welcome, including homes for low-income families, seniors, and individuals experiencing homelessness.

“Our city is committed to fostering inclusive, sustainable communities where everyone has access to safe and affordable housing,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic, “Thanks to the support of the Federal government’s Housing Accelerator Fund, we are unlocking city-owned land and creating opportunities for innovative housing solutions that directly benefit those who need it most.”

The consolidated sites located on Wellington St. N. will maximize the development potential to help achieve Kitchener’s Housing for All vision. The RFP process will be open from December 3, 2024, to January 14, 2025.

Organizations interested in participating can access the full RFP details at https://kitchener.bidsandtenders.ca/

“We recognize the urgency of the housing crisis and are taking bold actions to tackle it,” said Councillor Paul Singh, Chair of the City’s Planning and Strategic Initiatives Committee. “This initiative is a win-win: it leverages underutilized land to address pressing social and housing needs.”

The City encourages qualified organizations to take advantage of this opportunity and join the effort to create housing solutions that will have a lasting impact on the lives of Kitchener residents.
