The City of Kitchener is pleased to announce the return of the Kitchener Great Places Awards. Kitchener's Great Places Awards honour outstanding development projects that show a commitment to design excellence and innovation in urban design, sustainability and heritage conservation and contribute to a built environment to enhance quality of life.

The Great Places Awards aim to honour the individuals, businesses and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Kitchener landscape that fosters community pride, promotes safety and well-being and enhances residents' quality of life.

This year's award nomination categories include:

  • Future Design Leaders Award,
  • Master Planning Award,
  • Mike and Pat Wagner Heritage Award,
  • Neighbourhood Design Award, and
  • Urban Design Awards.

The Future Design Leaders award celebrates visionary design by secondary and post-secondary students that embrace innovation, sustainability, and creativity. The winner of this award will receive a monetary prize courtesy of Melloul Blamey Construction.

"Kitchener is a city that values sustainability, heritage conservation and celebrates design excellence and innovation in urban design," said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. "I'm excited to see the return of our Kitchener Great Places Awards and the opportunity to recognize some of the many development projects that showcase design excellence and innovation and the outstanding contributions of our community members and organizations who have contributed to making Kitchener a desirable place to live and visit."

"We’ve seen significant growth and development around major transit areas, and urban design is an important piece of creating a walkable, healthy community,” said Planning & Strategic Initiatives Committee Chair Paul Singh. “The Great Places Awards celebrates the industry innovators who think creatively and model design excellence and innovation in urban design – they’re thinking about what Kitchener will look like in the future.”  

The nominations are now open and will close on April 28, 2023. Individuals, businesses and organizations are encouraged to submit their projects for nomination.

The City’s awards planning committee is also searching for professionals in various fields, including planning, urban design and sustainability, to be part of a jury panel that will later help section award winners. Interested experts and academics are encouraged to apply.
