The City of Kitchener is showcasing its Female Firefighter in Training (FFIT) camp this week, June 25-28 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Waterloo Region Emergency Services Training and Research Centre, 1001 Erbs Rd.
Fire Chief Robert Gilmore welcomed 24 participants, ages 15-19, to Camp FFIT, alongside Mayor Berry Vrbanovic, to kick off the week. The four-day camp provides hands-on training and experience in different fire demonstrations and exercises, including:
- personal protective equipment (PPE) & self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA),
- search and rescue,
- radio communications,
- auto extrication,
- high-angle rappelling,
- hydrants and handlines,
- CPR scenarios and more.
Led by certified firefighters, Kitchener Fire staff, and other instructors volunteering their time, the program aims to educate and empower young women to explore a career in fire services.
