To commemorate the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty the Queen Consort, the City of Kitchener will be lighting Carl Zehr Square emerald green and offering free community skates and public swims on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7.

The lighting of Carl Zehr Square will see Kitchener joining other cities across Canada and throughout the Commonwealth in a national illumination initiative being coordinated by the Canadian Department of Heritage. His Majesty King Charles III’s coronation emblem is green and white, and green is associated with the environment, which has been an important cause for His Majesty.

“On behalf of the residents of the City of Kitchener, I extend our congratulations to His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty the Queen Consort on the occasion of the Coronation,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “King Charles III has dedicated his life to public service, including diversity, as well as the environment and sustainability, and we wish him continued health, strength and inspiration throughout his reign.”

In addition to the lighting, the City of Kitchener will further commemorate the Coronation by joining the Province of Ontario in making some community activities available free of charge this weekend, with free community skates and public swims at select city facilities.

"The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III is a historic occasion for our country and its people, as he is the first new Sovereign and Head of State for Canada in seven decades,” said Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “For those in our community who are looking to celebrate with activities locally, we are pleased to join together with other cities and communities throughout the Commonwealth, including those here throughout Ontario and Canada.”
