The City of Kitchener is encouraging those who are curious about additional dwelling units – tiny homes, backyard homes, secondary suites, duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes – to reach out about what may be possible on their property.
Building the homes needed for a growing community is one of the highest priorities for the City of Kitchener. The city recently launched Building Kitchener Together: a group of transformative projects to advance the City’s Housing For All strategy and provide a significant boost to the housing supply in Kitchener. Earlier this year, the City of Kitchener approved new zoning regulations that permit up to four dwelling units on lots that allow a single-detached dwelling, semi-detached dwelling or street-fronting townhouse dwelling, subject to regulations. The new regulations are now in effect and allow more dwelling units to be added to existing neighbourhoods. This gentle form of density increases the number of homes and the number of families that can live on a lot.
“Additional dwelling units or ADUs are a powerful tool for adding unique and varied housing in our neighbourhoods that meet the needs of homeowners at various stages in their lives,” said Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “ADUs are not a one-size-fits-all solution, so I encourage anyone who is curious about what’s possible on your property to reach out to our city planning team to discuss your opportunities and explore the possibilities.”
The City of Kitchener wants to make it easier for residents to understand how to start the process of building an additional dwelling unit (ADU). They’ve released a new Guide to Additional Dwelling Units, which answers many of the initial questions people may have when they pursue this type of development. The guide can be found at kitchener.ca/ADUs.
You can also reach out directly to City of Kitchener planning staff by phone, email, or in person at City Hall to help you get started and provide information about how you can start building your project team.
City staff will be holding an informational webinar about additional dwelling units (ADUs) in Kitchener on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 7-8:30 p.m. You can also stop by to chat with the team at the Kitchener Market on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visit the website to learn more about these opportunities.
“We want residents to know that we’re here to help them through this process,” said Katie Anderl, Project Manager, Planning. “We’ve got a ton of great initial information on our website and in our Guide to Additional Dwelling Units and we encourage anyone with questions to reach out and get in touch. We want to help you get ADUs built.”
