The City of Kitchener and members of Kitchener Rotary gathered on Victoria Park’s Roos Island yesterday evening to celebrate the grand re-opening of Roos Island and the renovated Rotary Bandstand. The bandstand was recently renovated through a generous donation from Kitchener Rotary to enhance the space that has long been a community favourite for more than 100 years.
“For over a century, the bandstand on Roos Island has been a hub of community connectivity and a place that has welcomed generations of Kitchener residents and visitors,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. "As we celebrate the re-vitalization and re-opening of Roos Island, we’re very grateful for the generosity of Kitchener Rotary to help renovate the historical bandstand so it can continue to be a place for gatherings and live performances, for our whole community, for years to come.”
The renovations upgraded the exterior of the bandstand and its electrical system. The surrounding landscaping was also improved with a new accessible pathway, plantings, and seating. Situated in the heart of the park and surrounded by the waters of Victoria Park Lake, the bandstand is a focal point in the park that can be enjoyed year-round.
“100 years of continuous Rotary service to the community is quite an achievement” said Adrian DeCoo, the 100th President of Kitchener Rotary. “The idea of funding the refurbishment of the bandstand became one that we thought would symbolically continue to reflect our legacy, and our promise. The history of the bandstand is even longer than our 100 years of service to the community. It seems fitting that we should build on that history. Like Rotary, the bandstand exists to serve all in the community.”
Come see the new Rotary Bandstand for yourself during your next visit to Victoria Park or see it in use throughout July and August at the Roos Island Music Series! Also, later this year, watch as the Victoria Park enhancements continue with the re-opening of The Boathouse, as an exciting new music and dining venue in the heart of our city.
