Kitchener, Ontario – The City of Kitchener has extended the snow event and significant weather event to allow access for crews to deal with the unprecedented amount of snow that has accumulated, particularly over the past week. Both the snow event and significant weather event will remain in effect until they are cancelled by the City.
Our crews are working around the clock to continue clearing snow across the city. While snow clearing operations have been underway consistently, the snow accumulation from multiple back-to-back significant snowfalls means that the City requires more time to clear the snow from roads and address large snowbanks across the city with snow loading activities. Parked cars are the main obstacle for crews trying to complete snow removal and loading activities.
The snow event currently in effect was first declared on Saturday, Feb. 16 based on snow accumulation and credible weather forecast information. The continuation of the snow event declaration is required since this enacts the City's tag-and-tow process. Residents are prohibited from parking their cars on city streets at any time when a snow event has been declared by the City. The ticket for parking on the street during a snow event is $80. Vehicles can also be towed if a maintenance vehicle is unable to get down a city street. Snow events help support snow plowing, salting and snow loading operations by activating a parking ban. Keeping parked cars off city streets helps ensure our maintenance vehicles can navigate streets and do their work efficiently and effectively to make sure city streets, bike lanes and sidewalks around City properties are safe for our community.
The City declared a significant weather event on Feb. 12 based on accumulated snow and credible forecast information. Since that time, we have received up to 70 cm of snow in places. As such, the significant weather event has remained in place since Feb. 12 as it has taken City crews longer to complete snow clearing operations and deliver our expected services. We urge all residents to take extra precautions when using roads, sidewalks and walkways as some surfaces and pathways remain constrained, slippery, or blocked due to limited snow storage. Sightlines at intersections, driveways, and pedestrian crossings may also be constrained. Please take all precautions before proceeding onto a roadway or crossing a driveway.
