Long service awards for volunteer groups

The City of Kitchener has a long history of working with volunteers not only individually, but also as part of committees and affiliated groups. Tonight, council recognized the long service milestones of some these volunteer groups that help deliver valued service to our citizens. Representatives from the following groups were presented with certificates of appreciation for their service to the community.

  • Kitchener-Waterloo Sports Council and KidSport – 20 years
  • Waterloo Region Track 3 Ski School – 25 years
  • KW Diving Club – 30 years
  • K-W Sertoma Speed Skating Club – 55 years
  • Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club – 80 years
  • Rockway F.R.I.E.N.D.S. – 40 years
  • Happy Harmonica’s – 40 years
  • Mt. Hope Breithaupt Park Neighbourhood Association – 35 years
  • Greenbelt Neighbourhood Association - 40 years
  • Victoria Hills Neighbourhood Association – 45 years
  • Chandler-Mowat Neighbourhood Association - 25 years
  • Williamsburg Community Association – 10 years
  • Settler’s Grove Association – 10 years

Not present, but also recognized were:

  • Huron Community Association – 5 years
  • Country Hills Recreation Association – 35 years
  • K-W Olympic Field Hockey – 35 years

Creative Hub at 44 Gaukel

A creative hub at 44 Gaukel will be moving ahead with council’s approval of a $775,000 investment from the Economic Development reserve fund. Council had previously allocated these funds to the creative hub from the sale of 48 Ontario Street. Make it Kitchener identifies art, culture and the creative industries as a key economic sector and a major factor in the vitality of our community and investing in space for creation, connection, and career and business development supports those working in creative industries in the ways we have seen done locally in the technology sector.

Council also endorsed staff’s recommendation for a partnership model where the city retains oversight of the hub but involves partners in the day-to-day operations. This model has seen success with ArtsBuild Ontario and the Accelerator Centre on the second floor at 44 Gaukel where hardware-focused start-ups and arts, culture and creative industry organizations are able to share space and ideas. The entire second floor of 44 Gaukel is in full use and expanding the hub to both floors allows us to build on that momentum and experience.

Stormwater report card

Council endorsed the latest stormwater management report card and accompanying technical memo this evening. The city conducts annual monitoring to evaluate the condition of targeted creeks every year as part of its efforts to improve the health of its streams and rivers through the citywide stormwater management program. The five-year report cards, which look at trends over a longer period, summarize overall stream health based on the results of the annual monitoring program. There are four components to the report card: the physical, chemical and biological health of the city’s streams, as well as an assessment of overall SWM effectiveness.
