September is almost here and that means back to school for local kids. It also means Kitchener Fire is getting ready to be out in school zones to help make sure kids feel safe and to remind drivers to slow down and pay extra attention.

For the last 3 years, members of Kitchener Fire have parked fire trucks in school zones and walked the streets during the first week school. “We want kids to feel as safe as possible as they head back to school,” says Tom O’Hara, public education officer. “Kitchener Fire’s presence on the streets shows them that someone they trust is in the area and seeing the trucks and messages hopefully reminds parents and other drivers to slow down and stay safe in school zones.”

Members of Kitchener Fire are happy to speak with kids as they walk and they will have fire safety information with them as well. Parents can also take pictures with their kids and quick tours of a fire truck are welcome - just don’t be late for school!
