Have you ever wondered how roads and sidewalks are maintained or how power gets to your homes? How safe drinking water comes out of your taps or how parks and natural areas get healthy trees? You’ll have the chance to learn from the professionals who keep our city running during the City of Kitchener’s Public Works Week Open House and Family Fun Night.

Join City staff at the Kitchener Operations Facility (131 Goodrich Dr., Kitchener) on Wednesday May 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. to discover the exciting world of public works. Fun, family-friendly activities will help you learn about and experience the work public works staff do every day. Get up close and personal with construction vehicles and City equipment like plows and fire trucks or test your skills on an equipment simulator. Join in on hands-on public works activities guided by City staff, get a behind-the-scenes look at the Kitchener Operations Facility, and meet the people who keep our city running. There will also be face painting, balloon art, photo opportunities and more for all ages to enjoy. Local food trucks will be there for you to buy some dinner or a treat to end the day, so plan to come early and spend the evening.

The Open House and Family Fun Night is part of Kitchener’s celebration for National Public Works Week, taking place from May 18 – 24 this year. Public Works Week recognizes the important roles public works professionals play in supporting our communities. This year's theme – People, Purpose, Presence – highlights that the core of public works is our connection to the people we serve. Meeting the needs of our community gives us a strong sense of purpose as public works professionals. While public works staff often work behind the scenes and may never meet many of the people they support, they are ever-present, working to make sure our community continues to run smoothly to support you and your family. Kitchener public workers care about our community and deliver important services that make our city a great place to live, work and play.
