Kitchener – Spend time outdoors with your community, celebrate the grand opening of Huron Natural Area’s newly constructed and expanded trail network, and join our Bee Kitchener pollinator party on Saturday, June 16, from 1 – 2:30 p.m. at Huron Natural Area.

The City of Kitchener received $400,000, through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, delivered by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, to improve and extend portions of the trails that link Strasburg and Huron Road, connecting residents to this amazing resource right in their neighbourhood.

“The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program is ensuring residents in Kitchener have access to improved community spaces,” said Marwan Tabbara, Member of Parliament for Kitchener South—Hespeler. “The Huron Natural Area Trail System enhancements we are celebrating add to the healthy, active lifestyle we enjoy here. I know residents will revel in these new features for years to come.”

“With this funding we were able to upgrade the existing six kilometres of trails by extending them another kilometre,” says Denise McGoldrick, general manager, infrastructure services. “This extension improves access to the trails for neighbouring residents and for the whole community to enjoy this beautiful natural amenity, while also protecting and preserving the natural habitat.”

Bring your whole family to help local dignitaries officially open the new trail and have fun at our pollinator party with lots of activities for kids. Go on a bug scavenger hunt, participate in a pollinator planting project and take a guided walk on the trail.

“The City of Kitchener is officially recognized as a Bee City,” states Joshua Shea, natural area coordinator, infrastructure services, City of Kitchener. “We’re committed to protecting pollinators in our community. Come out and learn about the amazing variety of pollinating species including bees, birds, butterflies and beetles.”
