Sandhills Park

Working together to create active public spaces, residents in the Cedar Hill neighbour, the University of Waterloo and the City of Kitchener partnered to pilot a new process for the Sandhills Park rehabilitation project.

As a result of the participatory budgeting process, a development plan was created for Sandhills Park and construction will begin in August 2019. The following amenities were chosen for the park:

  • Accessible chess table;
  • community events space;
  • natural play area (logs, timbers, rocks) with accessible transfer station;
  • Accessible two-bay swing set;
  • site clean-up (dead trees, overgrowth, weeds, etc.) to improve sightline and make more room for amenities;
  • bench on accessible pad;
  • edible plantings/food forest*;
  • native perennial and shrub plantings;
  • and improved access to waste disposal facilities.

 *Implementation of the food forest is subject to volunteer support and leadership.

Take a look at the concept plan for the park.

The construction of all elements listed will begin Aug. 6, 2019 and will be completed in the fall of 2019.
