Growth management strategy

Suburbs

Every year, more people - from students and young professionals to families and older adults - make our city their new home. This is a good thing - we welcome new residents and the many benefits they bring our community, including diversity; safe, thriving neighbourhoods; and a healthy economy.

However, we also know that new growth must be properly managed to ensure the health of our city is never compromised, and sustain all of the features that make our city a great place to live.

The Kitchener Growth Management Strategy (KGMS)  provides a framework for effectively managing our growth, focusing on:

  • Conserving and enhancing our natural and cultural heritage resources,
  • Ensuring greater transportation choice
  • Strengthening communities
  • Creating vibrant urban places
  • Fostering a strong economy
  • Managing change in an effective, coordinated manner

Our strategy specifies where growth can take place, ensuring every development complements our community priorities and aligns with our future infrastructure investments.

KGMS annual monitoring reports

Each year, we prepare an annual growth management monitoring report to track the supply of local development opportunities, as well as our progress on meeting our intensification and density targets.

See how we're doing - check out our past reports below:

The Kitchener Growth Management Plan (KGMP) and the provincial Places to Grow program also support our efforts to plan for growth and development in a way that supports economic prosperity, protects the environment and helps communities achieve a high quality of life across the province.
