 Managing Deputy Returning Officer (MDRO)

The MDRO is the manager of each voting location. They will be the point of contact for other election workers who may have questions or concerns. They will also attend to candidates who enter the Voting Place or their Scrutineers.

Pay: $25/hr (under review)

Responsibilities:

  • Efficiently facilitate a customer driven and impartial voting process that meets the requirements of the Municipal Elections Act and encourages voter participation and inspires confidence in the Municipal Election;
  • Manage the voting location and all election workers;
  • Supervise voting procedures as set out in the Municipal Elections Act, ensuring that all voting procedures are carried out correctly and that everyone who is entitled to vote may do so;
  • Coordinate the set-up of the voting location, including ensuring appropriate placement of signage;
  • Oversee operation the vote tabulator at the assigned voting location;
  • Administer written oaths to election workers, candidates & scrutineers;
  • Record the names of scrutineers;
  • Issue replacement ballots to electors when necessary;
  • Report votes tabulated throughout the day;
  • Close the vote tabulator and obtain results;
  • Remove the memory card, place it in the bubble pack, initial seal;
  • Direct the DRO assigned to take the bubble pack with memory card directly to City Hall;
  • Complete and certify all forms required to account for ballots and to validate the votes cast at the assigned voting location;
  • Ensure all other forms are fully and accurately completed;
  • Close the voting location, with the assistance of the remaining election workers, and supervise the clean-up of the voting location;
  • Return results tape, tabulator, ballots, forms and other election materials to City Hall; and,
  • Direct inquiries from the media to the City Clerk.

Expectations:

  • Complete all required training (E.g. Election 101, tabulator training, E-ticket management training);
  • Achieve passing grade on mandatory election training testing;
  • Honour your commitment to work on the assigned date(s);
  • Arrive at assigned voting location at 9 a.m. on Voting Day;
  • Remain within the voting location from setup until the voting location is closed; and,
  • Treat electors, candidates and scrutineers with respect, dignity and equity.
 Deputy Returning Officer (DRO)

The DRO will assist voters in completing the required forms, amending the Voters’ List, striking voters off the Voters’ List, and issuing voters their appropriate ballot.

Pay: $17.50/hr (under review)

Responsibilities:

  • Efficiently facilitate a customer driven and impartial voting process that meets the requirements of the Municipal Elections Act and encourages voter participation and inspires confidence in the Municipal Election;
  • Arrive at voting place at 9 a.m. on voting day;
  • Assist the MDRO with the set-up and clean-up of the voting location, including appropriate placement of signage;
  • Check and confirm identification of voters and confirm an elector’s name as it appears on the Voters’ List (electronic or printed);
  • Strike elector names off the Voters’ List;
  • Issue appropriate ballot to electors along with instructions on how to vote;
  • Assist electors as required with completing forms as necessary;
  • Amend the Voters’ List as required;
  • Issue, verify and accept completed Proxy Voting forms;
  • Administer oaths as required;
  • Complete the appropriate documents when the voting location closes; and,
  • Assist with closing and clean-up of the voting location.

Expectations:

  • Complete all required training (E.g. Election 101, hands-on VoterView/laptop training);
  • Honour your commitment to work on the assigned date(s);
  • Arrive at assigned voting location at 9 a.m. on Voting Day;
  • Remain within the voting location from setup until the voting location is closed; and,
  • Treat electors, candidates and scrutineers with respect, dignity and equity.
 Tabulator Assistant (TA)

The Tabulator Assistant receives and inserts marked ballots into the tabulator and confirms the tabulation of the ballot with the voter.

Pay: $16.50/hr (under review)

Responsibilities:

  • Efficiently facilitate a customer driven and impartial voting process that meets the requirements of the Municipal Elections Act and encourages voter participation and inspires confidence in the Municipal Election;
  • Arrive at voting place at 9 a.m. on Voting Day;
  • Assist the MDRO with the set-up and clean-up of the voting location, including appropriate placement of signage;
  • Operate the vote tabulator at the assigned voting location, including certifying the “zero” tape prior to the opening of the voting location, processing ballots during voting hours, closing the tabulator and producing printed results;
  • Process ballots through the vote tabulator;
  • Troubleshoot rejected ballots and any error messages displayed on the vote tabulator; (moved from MDRO)
  • Redirect voter to DRO as required (cancelled or rejected ballots);
  • Escalate technical issues to the MDRO for additional support;
  • Provide hourly tally to the MDRO; and,
  • Assist with closing and clean-up of the voting location.

  • Arrive at assigned voting location at 9 a.m. on Voting Day;
  • Remain within the voting location from setup until the voting location is closed; and,
  • Treat electors, candidates and scrutineers with respect, dignity and equity.
 Election Assistant (EA)

The Election Assistant will assist voters as they enter the voting location, ensuring they are at their designated voting location and directing voters to the appropriate line.

Pay: $14/hr (under review)

Responsibilities:

  • Efficiently facilitate a customer driven and impartial voting process that meets the requirements of the Municipal Elections Act and encourages voter participation and inspires confidence in the Municipal Election;
  • Assist the MDRO with the set-up and clean-up of the voting location, including appropriate placement of signage;
  • Greet electors as they enter the voting location ensuring the voter is at the correct voting location;
  • Provide quick demonstrations as to how to mark ballots;
  • Direct electors to either the express line or bankers line as appropriate;
  • Distribute secrecy folders between the DRO and the TA;
  • Assist the MDRO as required throughout the day; and,
  • Assist with closing and clean-up of the voting location.

  • Arrive at assigned voting location at 9 a.m. on Voting Day;
  • Remain within the voting location from setup until the voting location is closed; and,
