Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean “to be monitored”?

  • When your smoke alarm activates or starts ringing, it’s because it senses smoke or CO.  The monitoring equipment sends a signal directly to the fire department and fire trucks will be dispatched to your home.

Do I need to be monitored?

  • There are only certain areas in Kitchener that are required to be monitored by Direct Detect.

What kind of equipment do I need?

  • You will require smoke alarms (typically one per floor), a CO alarm (optional), and a control panel connected to a phone line, internet or are wireless system.

How long does it take to install a monitoring system?

  •  A typical installation usually takes our technicians one to two hours to complete.

I have a fire monitoring panel from another company. Can I have Direct Detect monitor it?

  • It is possible for Direct Detect to monitor with your existing equipment as long as the proper codes are provided to the technicians so that they can access the programming of that system.

Do I pay for false alarms?

  • No, Direct Detect does not charge customers for false alarms.

How do I prevent a false alarm?

  • Some systems come with a built-in 30-second delay that give you time to cancel a false alarm. When Direct Detect technicians install the system, they also look for the best placement for the devices to help avoid false alarms.

I am testing my alarm, do I notify anyone?

  • Yes, if you are testing your alarm or doing work on the system, you must call Direct Detect to have the system placed 'off line'. This will avoid a false alarm and fire trucks being unnecessarily dispatched to your home.

What do I do when I hear my alarm?

  • In the event that you hear your alarm sound and you have signs of a fire in your home, leave immediately and call 911 when you are safely out of the building.
  • In the event that you hear your alarm sound, and you are aware of the cause but there is no emergency, then call Direct Detect and the response from the Fire Department will be down-graded as appropriate.

What happens in the event of a power failure?

  • In the event of a power failure, the system has a back-up battery that will keep the system functioning for 24 hours.

What devices are monitored by my alarm?

  • The devices that are monitored by your alarm would be the smoke alarms and CO alarms (optional).

What is the advantage of having a monitored smoke detector?

    1. The Fire Department receives the alarm immediately which decreases response time by not having to wait for the 911 call
    2. If there is a fire and you are not at home, Direct Detect will still send the signal directly to the fire department.

Am I responsible for testing my alarm?

  • Yes, alarms should be tested at least twice a year. We recommend testing when clocks are adjusted as an easy reminder.

How often do the batteries need changing?

  • The batteries in the smoke alarms that Direct Detect use typically last for about 5 years.  The smoke alarm sends a signal to the control panel to notify you when the batteries need replacing.

Why does my fire alarm constantly chirp or beep?

  • The smoke detector or CO detector will chirp when:
    • The battery is low
    • There is a problem with the detector
    • The detector has reached its end of life

How often do the smoke alarms need to be replaced?

  • Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years from the date of installation.
