UPDATE:

The Regional Municipality of Waterloo take the following action regarding changes to the vacant unit tax rebate program for commercial and industrial properties as set out in report COR-TRY-18-50 dated May 29, 2018: 

Eliminate the vacant unit tax rate rebate program for commercial and industrial properties effective for the 2019 taxation year.

Applications for vacancies in 2018 would be accepted up to February 28, 2019.

 

 

Our property-tax rebate program provides tax relief to property owners who have vacancies in commercial and industrial buildings.

Property owners can submit a tax rebate application each year that a building or portion of a building is vacant for at least 90 consecutive days.

Applying for a rebate

One application for vacancies that occurred during the first six months of the year and a second application for vacancies that occurred during the last six months of the year; or one application to cover all vacancies that occurred on your property during the entire tax year.

Copies of additional documentation you may have should also be submitted (originals will not be returned), including:

  • Expired leases
  • Media advertisements
  • Utility records
  • Any other material that would substantiate the application

The deadline to submit an application for a tax year is February 28 of the following year.

You may have an authorized representative submit the application for you, as long as a letter of authorization you have signed accompanies the form.

Applications will be reviewed and are subject to verification through site inspections or by further requests for information. Please keep a copy of your application.
