Athletic awards

Suburbs

Each year the city recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of many of this city's and country's finest amateur athletes, and the coaches who have inspired and motivated them to excellence.

On Tuesday March 20, 2018 the City of Kitchener held the 50th Annual Athletic Awards banquet, where local athletes were recognized for their Provincial, National, and International accomplishments. To be recognized athletes, individuals and teams must have won a Provincial and/or National Championship, or won Gold, Silver or Bronze at an International Championship.

Selection:

A review committee composed of one elected official, one community sport representative and one community services employee shall review the applications for recognition by the City of Kitchener to determine the eligibility of athletes.

More than 160 athletes and their coaches were recognized at the awards banquet, honoured by Mayor Berry Vrbanovic, and supported by city councillors: Scott Davey, Kelly Galloway-Sealock, Dave Schneider, Paul Singh, Sarah Marsh and John Gazzola.

Guest speaker, Darren Stevenson of 519Sports Online, shared his passion for covering local sport in our community, that mental toughness and positive attitude are keys to success in life and sports. He also surprised us with messages from former Athletic Award recipients and now Olympians Mandy Bujold and Alec Elliot.
