Have you ever looked around and thought that the make-up of our city - the placement of our buildings, public spaces, transportation systems and other amenities - just makes sense?

Our work includes both our natural and built spaces, blending architecture, landscape and planning practices together responsibly to make our urban areas unique, functional and attractive.

The urban design manual is a convenient, go-to resource for the development community, as well as residents, special-interest groups, city council and staff who are looking for details on our city's urban design guidelines and standards.

NEW: The City of Kitchener is undertaking a comprehensive update of the Urban Design Manual to reflect evolving expectations for the design of buildings and public spaces. 

2019 marks the year that City Staff are planning to bring Part A: Land Use and Built Form Urban Design Guidelines of the City’s Urban Design Manual to Council for approval.

As we move towards approval, the following represents an overview of the proposed timeline, outlining key milestones:

  • The Final Draft document has been posted
  • Additional public, stakeholder & internal consultation – February - March 2019
  • Final council approval - Fall 2019

‘Residential Infill in Central Neighbourhoods’ Design Guidelines:

As part of the Neighbourhood Secondary Planning process that is currently underway for the Victoria Park, Schneider Creek/ Cedar Hill and Civic Centre neighbourhoods—City staff will be developing a set of urban design guidelines for ‘Residential Infill in Central Neighbourhoods’.

This document will apply to all neighbourhoods within the central city area, and in addition, we hope to have a section that contains guidelines unique to each neighbourhood.  As it stands, the general guidelines have been drafted that will apply to all neighbourhoods—these guidelines will address things like building placement, setbacks, garage projects, landscaping, building design and massing, etc.

Urban Design staff would like to invite residents in these areas to join staff in a design charrette intended to develop the unique set of neighborhood specific guidelines.

Neighbourhood Design Charrettes are scheduled for the following dates/times:

  • Mill Courtland Woodside Park Neighbourhood - April 24 from 6 – 8 p.m. at City Hall Conestoga Room, Main Floor
  • Midtown Neighbourhood – May 15 from 6 – 8 p.m. at City Hall Conestoga Room, Main Floor
  • King East Neighbourhood – May 16 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at City Hall Schmalz Room, Second Floor

NEW: FINAL DRAFT OF THE URBAN DESIGN MANUAL

Deadline for comments on the final draft document is April 1, 2019.
