Building standards

Suburbs

Whether you're planning to construct a building for commercial office space, a warehouse to store parts used by local manufacturers, or a block of buildings featuring a mixed use of residential and retail development -- you must go through our building-permit application and approval processes before breaking ground.

These processes, which are in accordance with our own building bylaw and the Ontario Building Code, help ensure your proposed development is safe, structurally sound and conform to our building and fire codes.

Our requirements apply to industrial, commercial, institutional and multi-residential:

  • Construction
  • Alterations
  • Changes of use

E-laws

Some code users may only require either the Building Code Act, 1992 or the Building Code (O.Reg. 332/12). Both documents can be obtained online, at no charge, using E-laws on the Ontario Building Code website.

Our revenue and expenses

The Ontario Building Code Act requires us to share an annual report detailing our collection of fees, as well as our costs to administer and enforce the act. The following documents detail our revenue and expenses from 2009 to 2015.
