Community Clean-Ups

Community clean-ups are easy ways to get many people involved and thinking about the environment. They bring neighbours, colleagues or classmates together in a common cause. They provide an opportunity to see how a small act for a short time can have a large physical impact and they may help participants develop a sense of their influence on their environment.

And when community members get involved in cleaning their neighbourhoods, parks and open spaces, they are less likely to litter and are more likely to keep it clean!

Make a positive difference for the local environment, as well as the quality of life for you and your neighbours. It's easy!

Organize Your Own Clean-up

There are parks and trails across our community....the City of Kitchener encourages neighbourhoods and families across the city to be part of or organize a clean-up in any green space, woodland, park or natural area of your choice. Since Earth Day should be every day, clean-up events can be organized at any time of year!

Clean-up supplies, tips to organizing a clean-up, and garbage pick-up arrangements are available year-round to assist any Kitchener resident who wants to organize a clean-up in a city of Kitchener public space.

Register a clean-up that will take place between April 1-30 and, in honour of Earth Day, you will receive prizes from the city and Tim Hortons (while supplies last). Supplies are available on a first come, first serve basis - so register your group today!

There is no cost for participating in the Organize Your Own Clean-up! Register online to organize your own community clean-up -- or download a registration form to mail or fax in.

School-Yard Clean-ups

Throughout April, with a focus on Earth Day, school leaders can help school children to interact with their environment, and see their human impact on it, by organizing schoolyard clean-ups.

Groups who register with the city will receive supplies and be entered into a draw for an environmental improvement grant. The registration deadline is two weeks prior to your event or April 13, 2012 at the latest. Register online here or download a registration form to fax or mail in.

Call 519-741-2227 if you have any questions.

20 Minute Makeover

On Friday April 20th, the annual 20 Minute Makeover asks businesses and community members to spend a mere 20 minutes at or around 2 p.m., picking up litter near their workplaces or homes.

By bringing thousands of people together, simultaneously showing community pride in the spirit of Earth Day, community participants truly demonstrate what a difference 20 minutes can make!

Be counted and get free supplies by registering on-line or by downloading a registration form to fax or mail in.
