Property Taxation Property taxation is the main source of revenue for the City of Kitchener. Residential, commercial, industrial and other tax classes form the assessment base for the city. Your final property tax bill is made up of three main components:
- Education Taxes - This tax rate is set by the Province and is collected by the City on behalf of the board. These funds are remitted to the local school board you support, either the Waterloo Region District School Board or the Waterloo Region Catholic School Board. In 2005, 21 per cent of your residential tax dollars will be spent on education.
- Municipal Taxes - The tax rate to cover the costs of supplying municipal services is based on Council’s adoption of the annual budget. Revenues from provincial grants, user fees and other sources are deducted from the total expenditures, resulting in a final amount that needs to be raised through taxation. In 2005, 31 per cent of your residential tax dollars will go to the City.
- Regional Taxes - A portion of the tax bill for all residents of Waterloo Region, whether they enjoy rural or urban living, goes back to the Region to support their role in supplying various services including transit, garbage and recycling, housing and emergency services. In 2005, 48 per cent of your residential tax bill will support services supplied by the Region.
